NFL Mock Draft 2.0

Vikings Corner analyst Daniel House is set to unveil his 2nd NFL Mock Draft for the 2013 season. Which player does he have your favorite team selecting?

 

Here is Daniel House’s NFL Mock Draft 2.0:

 
1. Kansas City Chiefs: Luke Joeckel- OT: Texas A&M- Nothing changes here unless the Chiefs pull a draft day trade. I don't foresee this happening and think they will want to solidify the offensive line in front of Alex Smith. Joeckel gives the Chiefs an offensive tackle for the future. He has long arms, is very agile and easily could be a fixture on the Chiefs offensive line for many seasons. Central Michigan's Eric Fisher has a ton of upside, but comes from a smaller school, which poses less security with this pick.

 

2. Jacksonville Jaguars-Dion Jordan- DE/OLB: Oregon- Jordan has watched is stock rise over the past few months. He was by far the most impressive player at the Scouting Combine and proved that he is a top pick. He is so lanky, but is strong and quick at the point of contact. He reminds me of Aldon Smith and could be a premier pass rusher for the Jaguars. The Jaguars could not get to the quarterback last season and need to improve that skill. Gus Bradley is a defensive coach and knows what is best to improve the poor defense the Jaguars displayed last season.

3. Oakland Raiders- Sharrif Floyd- DT: Florida- Floyd's stock has immensely rised over the past few months. He has great size and can be a run defender at the same time. Many have compared his skill set to J.J. Watt, but he has interior technique. The Raiders voided the contract of Richard Seymour and released Tommy Kelly, so defensive line is definitely a need. This is cautiously optimistic for Raiders fans, as we never know what to expect from the Raiders on draft day.

4. Philadelphia Eagles- Eric Fisher- OT: Central Michigan- No question the Eagles will need to improve an offensive line that was riddled with injuries last season. This is no change from our last mock draft and it seems to be a lock. The scheme that new head coach Chip Kelly will implement requires complicated protection schemes and will leave the quarterback with vulnerability. Fisher has proven that he is a great run blocker, but struggled at times in pass blocking schemes in college. At the Scouting Combine, he proved that he is working on his pass blocking and I like his agile frame.

 

 

5. Detroit Lions- DeMarcus Milliner- CB: Alabama- After watching the Lions play the Vikings twice and in several games this season, there is no question they need help in the pass defense area. With a 4.37 40 yard dash time, Milliner brings speed to a position group that the Lions struggled in last season. Despite resigning Chris Houston, I don't think the Lions can afford to be shredded in a pass happy NFC.

 

 

6. Cleveland Browns- Tavon Austin- WR: West Virginia- Many would disagree with the suggestion of the Browns picking Austin at this venture of the draft. With a team that lacked explosiveness and has had no offensive potency in the last 10 seasons, the Browns need something. Rob Chudzinski's offense fits the scheme of slot threats and Brandon Weeden was growing at the end of last season. Austin can be the Percy Harvin style receiver that the Browns need to improve.

7. Arizona Cardinals- Ziggy Ansah-DE/OLB: BYU- With the Cardinals playing in a division where the read option is prevalent, they need someone athletic to stop the likes of Colin Kaepernick and Russell Wilson. Ansah comes from a small school in BYU, but his skill set is very attractive. He has speed and is big enough to drop into the three technique on the defensive line. Many believe the Cardinals will address guard, but that isn't a traditional way in the NFL draft. The guard position isn't a top tier selection and generally doesn't happen until the mid-section of the draft. If they want guard, they can trade down to select a player like Chance Warmack of Alabama.

8. Buffalo Bills- Geno Smith- QB: West Virginia- The best option at quarterback is available, so the Bill's won't pass on Geno Smith. Despite signing Kevin Kolb last week, the Bills can't resist Smith's style on their roster. Kolb is getting paid, but will get backup money if he doesn't start. Smith has the "read-option" skills and can give Buffalo an aspect they have never had before. Buddy Nix drafts talent and has expressed that Geno Smith has the ability to be elite in this league.

9. New York Jets- Bjoern Werner- DE: Florida State- The Jets could not get to the quarterback last season and need to improve in this area. Rex Ryan is great at developing defensive lineman and isn’t afraid to take a chance on a player like Werner. He had great production is his final season at Florida State by recording 13 sacks. He has raw talent and just needs to be worked with on his technique.

 10. Tennessee Titans- Jonathon Cooper- OG- North Carolina: The Titans have focused their attention on becoming a physical football team, especially upfront. With the addition of free-agent guard Andy Levitre, the Titans will have one of the best offensive lines in football. They could add another interior offensive lineman with their top pick and help improve a dismal offensive line from last season. Cooper is also so flexible and can play all the interior positions on the offensive line.

11. San Diego Chargers- Lane Johnson-OT- Oklahoma: Phillip Rivers was so battered and bruised by the end of last year, that the Chargers can't afford to not upgrade the offensive line. After conducting some research, I have discovered that many fans call current LT King Dunlap, "King Duncrap", which is normally a bad sign. Johnson had a great Senior Bowl and ran one of the top offensive line 40 yard dash times at the Scouting Combine.

12. Miami Dolphins- D.J. Fluker-OT- Alabama: Fluker is on the rise and has already performed visits with many of the teams in the top tier of the draft. Fluker has nice size and is agile at the point of initial pass rush. He has had exposure with the competition of the SEC and has faced some of the best defensive line competition in the country. With the Dolphins losing Jake Long to free agency, they need to pick up someone to protect Ryan Tannehill.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers- Star Lotulelei- DT: Utah- The Bucs lost Roy Miller in free agency and need to fill a hole in the defensive line. Lotulelei has the skills to be a top draft pick, but has been falling lately due to his heart valve condition. It’s understandable that teams have been worried, but the Bucs can’t let a player with this type of skills fall past their pick.

14. Carolina Panthers- Sheldon Richardson- DT: Missouri-The Panthers had one of the worst pass rushes and struggled to put pressure up the middle. With one of the worst middle defensive line attacks in the league, defensive tackle is a must for the Panthers. Richardson is explosive off the ball and can create a pass rush up the middle. The real downside is he is very unpolished and would need time with coaches to develop his skills.

15. New Orleans Saints- Barkevious Mingo- OLB/DE: LSU- The Saints are looking to improve upon one of their worst defensive seasons in team history. They will be switching to the 3-4 and Mingo fits the scheme well. Mingo has size and speed and is comparable to an Aldon Smith in the NFL. He does have issues in run support, but that can be  improved through more exposure.

16. St. Louis Rams- Kenny Vaccaro- S: Texas- The Rams have a huge hole at safety. With Craig Dahl and Quintin Mikell gone, the Rams are in complete rebuilding mode at this position. Many believe they will look for a receiver, but with the depth in this year’s draft, they can address this in later rounds. Vaccaro is an absolute ball hawk and is a physical presence at the position. I like how he isn’t afraid to stick his nose into run support.

17. Pittsburgh Steelers- Xavier Rhodes- CB: Florida State- Teams had the ability to drop back and throw on any given down against the Steelers last season. A team can never have enough talented cornerbacks on their roster. The Steelers are looking to overhaul and get younger as soon as possible. Rhodes brings much needed size and coverage ability to a defense that needs a ton of help.

18. Dallas Cowboys- Chance Warmack- OG- Alabama: The interior of the Cowboys offensive line is in shambles and it needs to be fixed to give Tony Romo more time in the pocket. As discussed earlier, Warmack is likely to be placed in the “tier two” category, which means he will ultimately be drafted in the 15-18 pick range. Warmack has the talent to be selected in the top ten, but guards are notoriously not drafted at that venture of the draft. In other words, this is a steal for the Cowboys at pick 18.

19. New York Giants- Alec Ogletree- ILB: Georgia- Ogletree has a ton of off the field issue that could scare teams away, but many people close to him say he has them under control. The Giants need help on the weak side of the defense after losing Chris Canty on the defensive side of the ball. Ogletree will be drafted based upon his explanation of the off the field issues.

20. Chicago Bears- Manti Te’o- LB: Notre Dame- Many believe that Manti Te’o will fall in the NFL Draft and has the ability to even drop out of the first round. I don’t see this happening because of the need teams have at linebacker in the first round. The Bears lost Brian Urlacher and need a replacement at the middle of the linebacker corps. Te’o brings with him the Lennay Kekua hoax and has been questioned after his less than stellar performance in the BCS National Championship Game. The Bears have had success drafting Notre Dame players in the past and won’t be afraid to give Te’o a chance.

21. Cincinnati Bengals- Desmond Trufant- CB: Washington- The Bengals were ranked 7^th against the pass last season, but need to keep up with the passing league. Trufant brings great coverage skills and is even better in run support. My belief is that teams can never have enough great cornerbacks on their roster. The Bengals will draft for talent and not need at this juncture of the draft.

22. St. Louis Rams- Eddie Lacy- RB: Alabama- After allowing Steven Jackson to leave for Atlanta, the Rams need immediate help at running back. Lacy is easily the best running back in the draft and brings small size, but shifty ability. Lacy was successful at Alabama and has proven he can continually receive elevated carries on a consistent basis.

23. Minnesota Vikings- Cordarelle Patterson- WR: Tennessee- Patterson would be an amazing addition for the Vikings at this venture of the NFL Draft. Patterson brings a 6’3” frame and speed to the table. He has some of the best leaping ability in this draft and is the top wide receiver on my draft rankings. Pair Patterson with Greg Jennings and Jarius Wright and Christian Ponder will have no excuse not to be successful next season.

24. Indianapolis Colts- Sylvester Williams-DT: North Carolina- The Colts had one of the worst statistical seasons against the run and need to address this issue before next season. Williams brings an unbelievable 6’3” size to the table, which isn’t a normal sight among interior defensive lineman. I definitely could see the Vikings selecting Williams at 23 and then Patterson with pick number 25, but if Patterson is available, the Vikings won’t run the risk of losing him before their next pick.

25. Minnesota Vikings- Jarvis Jones- LB: Georgia- Jarvis Jones was mocked in some drafts as a top ten pick at the beginning of the “mocking” season. After he decided not to perform at the Scouting Combine and was supposedly diagnosed with a spinal issue, many teams became scared. People from his camp are saying he is perfectly fine and he looked stellar at the Georgia Pro Day. If he is available, he fills a need and would be an immediate upgrade to a less than stellar linebacker corps. Rick Spielman will have him evaluated, but I don’t think there is any reason to believe anything is wrong based upon the latest reports that have been released. He brings size, speed, and pass rushing ability to an improving Vikings defense.

 
26. Green Bay Packers-Tyler Efiert- TE: Notre Dame- Yes, the Packers resigned an inconsistent Jermichael Finley, but Aaron Rodgers could use another target after losing Greg Jennings to the Vikings. I look for the Packers to incorporate more two tight end sets to heckle opposing defenses. The Packers know the last successful tight end to be drafted from Notre Dame because they see him twice a year. Kyle Rudolph worked well for the Vikings and Efiert could be a similar style option for the Packers. Look for the Packers to draft Montee Ball later in the draft, but if they get the feeling he will be selected before their second round pick, don’t be surprised if the Packers pull the trigger on Ball in the first round.

27. Houston Texans- DeAndre Hopkins- WR: Clemson- Andre Johnson is in his 11th season and could be hitting the production decline. Hopkins brings elite speed and ball skills to the table. He was a former basketball player back in high school and was one of the top players in his state. He reminds me of Anquan Boldin and could bring in a ton of receptions over the next few seasons.

28. Denver Broncos-Damontre Moore-DE: Texas A&M- The Broncos needed to address defensive end after losing Elvis Dumervil in free agency. Moore will complement Von Miller well and would provide some help off the edge. The downside with Moore is definitely not a speed pass rusher. This pick is still very up in the air and could be dictated by the rise and fall of talent on draft day.

29. New England Patriots- Kawann Short- DT: Purdue- The Patriots need a defensive tackle to complement Vince Wilfork in the interior of the defensive line. Bill Belichick loves versatility and Short could rotate along several spots on the defensive line.

30. Atlanta Falcons- Zach Ertz- TE: Stanford- Tony Gonzalez is coming back, but won’t be around much longer for the Falcons. The Falcons should draft Ertz in hopes that Gonzalez can mentor him and get him ready for the NFL. Ertz has great ball skills and route running ability. He led the tight ends in bench press reps and has speed to put along with all the essential skills of a tight end.

31. San Francisco 49ers- Jessie Williams- DT: Alabama- After losing Isaac Sopoaga to the Eagles in free agency, the 49ers need to add an interior defensive lineman. Willimas brings with him great run support skills and mediocre pass rushing skills. With work, he can improve his technique off the ball and become an elite defensive lineman.

32. Baltimore Ravens- Kevin Minter- LB: LSU- Minter is known for his physicality and has been rumored to be rising up many draft yards. . The Ravens need someone to replace Ray Lewis and an aging group of linebackers. Minter foots the bill and can be developed into a premier linebacker in this league.
